Distinguishing Features: Fleshy green layer around nuts, juice will dye skin and clothes brown

  • Leaf: Alternate, Pinnately compound one foot to two feet long leaf, up to 23, 5 inch long leaflets, leaflets are serrated, dark green leaf color, yellow fall color
  • Flower: Monoecious, male flowers are catkins, small scaley, cone-like buds; female flowers are up to 8-flowered spikes
  • Bark: Dark brown to grayish black, deep narrow furrows, diamond-shaped pattern.
  • Fruit or Seed: Nut with semi-fleshy covering, green fruit changes to black and breaks open
  • Other:
